About the initiative
Building a More Financially Informed North Carolina.
An independent, student-led initiative using research, education, and advocacy to help prepare the next generation for the financial decisions that shape their lives.
Who we are & why we exist
Financial literacy is the foundation of a stronger future.
The North Carolina Financial Literacy Initiative (NCFLI) is an independent, student-led research and advocacy initiative dedicated to preparing students for the financial responsibilities of adulthood. We believe financial literacy is more than a classroom subject—it is an essential life skill that empowers individuals, strengthens communities, and contributes to a healthier economy.
Yet completing a financial education course does not always mean students feel prepared for real-world decisions. NCFLI was founded to investigate this disconnect. Through original research involving more than 750 North Carolina high school students, we examine financial preparedness, identify gaps in existing education, and bring student perspectives into conversations about meaningful change.
Our mission is to advance financial education that begins earlier, emphasizes practical knowledge, and prepares students for life beyond the classroom. We believe a more financially informed generation creates opportunities not only for individuals, but for society as a whole.
